Red Flags to Recognizing Depression

Here are some red flags to recognizing depression in older adults

  • Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness

  • Feeling of sadness or of despair

  • Unsolved or exacerbated aches and pains

  • Loss of appetite and/or weight loss

  • Lack of interest in socializing or engaging in hobbies that you use to enjoy

  • Lack of motivation and low energy level

  • Sleep difficulties which may include difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, oversleeping, or fatigue

  • Decrease of self-worth (worries about being a burden, feelings of s or self-loathing)

  • Slowed movement or speech

  • Increased use of substances such as alcohol or other drugs

  • Thoughts of suicide of fixation on death

  • Memory problems

  • Neglecting self care such as personal hygiene, not taking medication
